Champion
Lady Chiefs to Host State Playoffs
By: Wayne White
It
is official now! The North Myrtle Beach Lady Chiefs completed the
regular season undefeated, captured the Region VIII-AAA Regular
Season Championship, and the Region VIII-AAA Tournament Championship.
These are all hurdles that the Lady Chiefs had to face on their
way to their ultimate goal of a State title.
NMB, now 20-0 on the season, completed the Region VIII schedule
undefeated for the second straight season. With a pair of wins in
the Region VIII Tournament earlier this week, the Lady Chiefs have
now won 24 consecutive matches against Region opponents. The Lady
Chiefs will now host the South Carolina AAA State Playoffs. The
opening round match for NMB will be played Tuesday, October 26,
at 6:00 p.m. Should the Lady Chiefs win the opener, then NMB will
host the second round on Thursday, October 28, at 6:00 p.m.
"This is what we have worked for all season," said
NMB senior co-captain Megan Johnson. "We set a few goals at
the beginning of the season but the main goal was to move further
in the State playoffs and hopefully reach the finals. Last year's
match against Bluffton has been on our minds for a year now and
it has helped fuel us this season."
Johnson is referring to NMB's 3-0 loss to Bluffton in the third
round of the AAA playoffs in 2009. NMB, which was ranked #1 in South
Carolina at the time, did not play its best match of the season
in the loss. That loss ignited an offseason full of workouts and
club league play that has resulted in an undefeated season so far
and a #5 ranking in South Carolina's AAA Coaches Poll.
In results posted on SC.Prepcountry.com, the Lady Chiefs will
face Midland Valley in the opening round of the playoffs. Midland
Valley is the #4 seeded team out of Region V. After that, NMB will
face the winner of the Bluffon (#2 seed in Region VII) and Lakewood
(#3 seed in Region VI) opening round match.
FOOTBALL
The
Chiefs season continued winless this past Friday as NMB fell 27-3
to Wilson on Homecoming night for the Tigers in Florence. While
it is tough to find the silver lining in a season that has not resulted
in a victory through eight games, there are spots that Head Coach
Perry Woolbright can hang his hat on for the program that he is
trying to build. The brightest spot is the play of several seniors
that continue to give their all despite the poor results. Brandon
Johnson, Tamarrick Hemingway and Javonte Kinney are three of the
NMB seniors that are helping Coach Woolbright build a strong foundation.
"The seniors continue to play all out every snap and they
understand that they are helping to lay the ground work for what
we are trying to do here," said the first year head coach.
"We would all like to see better results this season but I
am proud of every one of these guys. They have never let the losses
get to them and we continue to have good practices and play hard."
Johnson, who missed most of the season's first four games due
to an ankle injury, had his best rushing game of the season against
Wilson. He ran for 105 yards before reinjuring his ankle in the
second half. Hemingway is the Chiefs leading receiver and one of
the top two in tackles on the squad, while Kinney plays several
positions on the defensive line and is also one of the squad's leading
tacklers.
"We have our last home game this Friday and these seniors
deserve to go out with a win," said Coach Woolbright of NMB's
contest this Friday against St. James at 7:30 p.m. "A win will
not only boost the team as we look ahead, but it will also honor
and thank this group of seniors for their effort toward the program."
